Project

Green woodworking

This five-day intensive workshop introduces participants to the ancient craft of green woodworking using locally sourced trees and traditional hand tools. Learn essential techniques of cleaving, trimming, shaving, and drilling while discovering sustainable approaches to working with freshly cut wood. Through hands-on practice, participants will master traditional construction methods that require no metal fasteners or modern adhesives.

The workshop begins with understanding local tree species and their properties, progressing to the construction of functional objects such as stools and hay rakes. Participants will work with traditional tools including froes, drawknives, spokeshaves, and augers, developing both technical skill and an intuitive relationship with the material. These time-honored techniques reveal the inherent strength and flexibility of green wood while minimizing waste and energy consumption.

Building on these foundational skills, participants will collaborate to create a collective artistic installation, translating traditional craft techniques into contemporary creative expression. The week culminates with presentations and an exhibition showcasing both individual pieces and the collaborative installation. No prior woodworking experience required—this workshop offers designers, artists, and makers an opportunity to reconnect with material culture and local resources through the rewarding practice of green woodworking.
